Durango Wheel Club Saturday Rides

One of the first things I did after moving to Durango was sign up for the Durango Wheel Club. They’re a road cycling and bicycle advocacy group that does group rides and races in the Durango area.

I’ve never been part of a cycling club, never gone on too many group rides, but it’s something I want to do more of out here, and I don’t know the area too well, so a cycling club is a great way to meet people and learn routes.

The DWC posted a list of their Saturday morning rides for March and April. Being completely unfamiliar with the area I had no idea what to expect from the rides. I emailed with one of the guys in the club and he gave me some info on this weekends ride. But having no idea about length, elevation and the areas of all of these rides I decided to map them out so I’d know what I was getting myself into.

Luckily this Saturday’s ride looks pretty flat, we’ll see how I do.

Click below to see the maps of each ride below. (Hopefully these maps are close to accurate).

March 14: Valley and Old Shalona

March 21: Breen Loop

March 28: Haviland Lake

April 4: Vallecito Reservoir

April 11: Needles Store

April 18: Mancos

April 25: Durango Mountain Resort

  1. Jeff,
You are a champ! We have been talking about mapping the rides for over a year, you did it in a day!
    Thank You!

They do a great job setting the rides up to match the progression of your fitness. These can all be pretty easy or difficult depending on the pace. Valley and old shaloma is a perfect ride to start with, only about a 1.5 mile climb at the far end. It will totally depend on the pace the group sets; after week one these all have some pretty decent climbs. Enjoy!
