Carver Brewing Co’s Monkey Wrenched IPA

Monkey Wrenched I.P.A. according to Carver Brewing Co’s website is “An over the top hopped I.P.A.”. The beer alone sounds good, but the story behind it makes it all the more special. Mike from Carver sent me this little tidbit about the name of the beer (and Carver/Durango history):
“Monkeywrenched IPA” huge hop profile, assertive alcohol content (8.5%+ a.b.v.) in this “seldom seen” tribute to one of Carver Brewing’s first beer tasters, Edward Abbey. As legend has it, back in 1988, Bill Carver met Edward Abbey at a book-signing at Maria’s Bookstore. Bill was able to tap into Edward’s adventurous spirit and entice him to join him back at Carvers to sample one of the first batches of beer to come out of the pioneer brewery. According to Bill, Ed whole-heartedly approved of the brew and shortly thereafter the brew pub opened to the public, making Carvers the 1st post-prohibition craft brew pub in the four corners region and the second in Colorado (one month behind Denver’s Wynkoop Brewery).
Monkey Wrenched IPA is now on tap at Carver Brewing Co. Coming out just over 20 years after Abbey’s death, I think this is a beer Durango can get behind!
