Four Corners Cinco de Mayo
Cinco de Mayo isn’t a Mexican national holiday, most people in Mexico don’t celebrate it at all. It’s most widely celebrated in the state of Puebla where the Mexicans defeated the French on May 5th, 1862. It’s a much more widely celebrated holiday here in the United States. Many people assume that Cinco de Mayo is Mexican Independence day, which it isn’t (that day is September 16th). Many people in the US celebrate by drinking Corona and Margaritas and eating Mexican food while partying all night.
Thanks to three breweries in the Four Corners, we won’t have to drink Corona if we want to celebrate Cinco de Mayo.
Down in Farmington at Three Rivers Brewery they’re having a Cinco de Mayo party with food, beer and games. Their St. Patrick’s day party was such a hit they’re throwing another. For $15 in advance or $20 at the door you’ll get three pints of Three Rivers beer as well as a chance to build your own tacos. They have all the details listed over on their website, but it looks like both meat eaters and vegetarians will be going home full. They’ll have their own take on Mexican lagers, NM Colona on tap to wash down all those tacos. They’ll be going from 4-10pm on May 5th at the Three Rivers Banquet Hall at 101 E Main St in Farmington, NM.
If you’re in Durango Carver Brewing Company is having their own Cinco de Mayo party. They’ll be having a party on their awesome patio, with music by DJ Maize and DJX from 5:30PM – Closing Time. No word on food specials, but they’ll have their own take on the Mexican lager, Cerveza Real on tap (which I’ve been told goes quickly and probably won’t last too long past Cinco de Mayo) and $4 Cuervo Gold Margaritas. This all happens at Carver Brewing Co, 1022 Main Ave, Durango, CO.
And even if you’re planning on staying home Cinco de Mayo, but still want to celebrate a bit, you don’t have to resort to cheap Mexican macrobrews (no matter how great their advertising is, I lived in Mexico for six months and never once saw anyone drink a Corona). Ska Brewing released their Mexican Logger a few weeks back and is available at finer liquor stores in Colorado (not sure about NM, AZ and UT) in six packs.
So go out and have some tacos, guacamole, and great local beer this Cinco de Mayo, just know that you’re not celebrating Mexican Independence day.
