Bikes in the Telegraph

This weekend is the Iron Horse Bicycle Classic, and the local alt-weekly, The Durango Telegraph has got plenty of bike coverage.

In addition to a four page spread on the Iron Horse happenings (which isn’t online) there’s an article about a local frame builder, a story about the new bike co-op getting started, and a little mention of a new weekly ride getting started.

Co-editor Missy Votel writes about Norse Cycles, a local frame builder here in Durango making custom steel and titanium frames. According to the article Tom Joyner of Norse Cycles is one of three frame builders in town. Read the article here.

The other co-editor, Will Sands writes this week about Bicycle Lemonade, a local group that is restoring older bicycles and selling them very cheap. I first heard about Bicycle Lemonade on KSUT’s coverage of the Durango Green Living Expo where Bicycle Lemonade had their portable bike selling stand. Since then they’ve been at the Durango Farmer’s Market, where I ran into them a week or two ago. I talked to Russell Zimmerman of Durango Cyclery and one of the co-founders of Bicycle Lemonade. He said they’ll be at the farmer’s market once or twice a month as well as at other events around town. They’re accepting donations and even letting people come down to volunteer to fix up bikes. Their hope is to get everything in order to start a full blown bicycle co-op. Bike co-ops are a huge boon to the cycling community in my experience, allowing people that otherwise don’t have the means otherwise to learn some basic bike maintenance and get out and ride more. I’m hoping to make it down to the Bicycle Lemonade warehouse to work on some bikes soon. Click here to read the article in the Telegraph.

The last bike bit I could find in the Telegraph this week is in the Top Shelf column. It’s a small blurb but sounds like it could be a fun time. Rick Carney at Moe’s Starlight Lounge is started a weekly bike ride called Durango Cruzers. Starting this Saturday they’ll meet at Moe’s Starlight Lounge at 6pm with their bikes and in costume, have a drink and then ride to a few other bars. Each bar will have drink specials for the riders and every week will have a different theme. This week they’re doing a Toga theme (as an aside, what’s with Toga parties in Durango? This is the third I’ve seen in as many months). Click here to read the column (and scroll about halfway down the page).
