A few weeks back during the Great American Beer Festival in Denver, Draft Magazine’s Editor-in-Chief Erika Rietz interviewed a handful of people in the craft beer industry and posted the interviews to Youtube. One of those beer folks interviewed as Kris Oyler, Co-Founder and CEO of Steamworks Brewing Company here in Durango.

The interview is short and you can watch it below. They talk a bit about beer, but what I found more interesting was the talk of their beer and food pairing dinners. I’ve heard about Steamworks doing beer dinners, they discuss one in New York. It sounds like a really cool thing Steamworks is doing, but makes me wonder why they don’t do more events like this in their hometown of Durango.

The only local event I can think of that Steamworks has done recently was a beer and cheese pairing up at Durango Mountain this summer. I haven’t heard of any beer pairings they’ve done at their restaurant.

I’d love to see Steamworks do some beer and food events, it doesn’t have to be a full dinner, but something to highlight the pairing power of beer with various foods.

An article in yesterday’s Durango Herald by Chuck Slothower (the professional alter-ego of Beer at 6512’s Soggy Coaster) talks about beer sales rising at Durango Brewing Co., Ska Brewing Co., and Steamworks Brewing Co.

The craft beer market has seen increased sales all around as people skip the expensive wine for the more moderately priced, but equally good craft beer. And the locals are doing better than many others according to the article.

The article was picked up by Draft Magazine’s blog (one of the larger beer blogs on the net).

Good work Chuck/Soggy Coaster, and good work Durango, Ska and Steamworks! Keep it up.

In the March/April 09 issue of Draft Magazine the staff picked their choices for the top 10 beers for folks with adventurous palates. While none of the brews on the list come from any of our local breweries, Steamworks Brewing Co. does have two beers very similar to two of those on the list.

Draft Mag picked Spruce Tip Ale by Skagway Brewing Co, an ale brewed with spruce tips to give it a piney, mountain taste. Steamworks seasonal Spruce Goose keeps us warm and smelling pine trees throughout the winter since we can’t be out hiking under those pine trees.

Draft Mag’s other pick with a local doppelganger is Cave Creek Chili Beer. I’m not a big fan of spicy beers, especially Cave Creek, as far as I can tell it’s Tecate in a glass bottle with a serrano chili dropped in (According to the label/website Cave Creek used to brew beer, but now their beer is made in Tecate, Mexico). Steamworks Prescribed Burn Chili Beer on the other hand gives me the impression it’s made with a little more love. When I had it a few months ago it was made with a darker beer, an amber of some sort, but much of that flavor is lost to the spiciness.

Two of the other beers on the list sound interesting enough that I’d try them if I found ‘em. Wells Banana Bread Beer by Wells & Youngs Brewing and Mamma Mia! Pizza Beer by Pizza Beer Co. I’m a fan of banana bread, but I’d be afraid this beer would be too sweet. And I can’t imagine Pizza Beer tasting good, but I’d love to try it anyways.
