Basic memberships are $30, which gets you into all rides, races, DWC events as well as discounts to local merchants and 1 DWC water bottle, there are a few more levels of membership with a few more benefits and a bit more schwag. Click over to the DWC’s Membership page for all the info.

The Durango Wheel Club will also be hosting their annual spring kickoff party for members and folks that want to sign up. This year it will be at The Hub Training Center on Tuesday March 30th. Check out the Durango Wheel Club’s website for more info.

And one more bit of DWC info. They’re looking to get more women involved this year and have put out a call for suggestions on what might help make the DWC more welcoming to women riders. See this blog post on the website for more info and how to get in touch.

I haven’t been blogging about bikes much, even though I’m still riding (and will post up some pics/info about my winterized bike soon) it’s just hard to get too excited about cycling with all that snow out there. But there have been a couple things in the new recently that are potential threats to Durango area trails.

First is news that La Plata County is thinking about building a road from the Three Springs area to downtown Durango. This would get pretty close to Horse Gulch/Telegraph and many other trails just outside Durango. The Durango Herald has a new piece about it, and the Durango Telegraph has a piece that looks at it from an open space perspective. Both are worth a read. I haven’t heard anything from Trails 2000 about this, but I imagine they’re working hard to keep access to open space and trails open.

The second piece of news is down in Farmington. According to the Durango Wheel Club usage of the Glade Recreation Area (Road Apple trails) is being looked at, possibly allowing more motorized vehicles (4×4’s, dirt bikes, etc). The BLM is accepting comments on trail usage until January 15th, so click here to let them know how you’d like to see the trails used.

And last, my wife wrote an article for The Telegraph about Walt Axthelm, a 76 year old Durango resident that recently took first place in his age group at the Cyclocross National Championships.

Fall means Cyclocross for many cyclists (not me, although I’m quite curious, if anyone is selling a used cyclocross bike in the Four Corners, around 55cm send me an email through the contact form on the About page)

The Durango Herald has the full schedule for the Fort Lewis College Cyclocross Series. Racing starts November 1st at The Fort. Races in the series will be held in Dolores, Cortez, Aztec and Durango throughout the month of November. The finals will be back at the Fort on December 6th.

For those needing some practice before the races (or those just learning) the Durango Wheel Club is holding two weekly cross rides. Sunday mornings and Wednesdays at noon, both up at Fort Lewis.

Even if you’re not racing or riding, cyclocross is fun for spectators too, stop by and take in the action.

I imagine the prices will be a bit higher at the garage sale today, but the quality and selection should be much greater as well.

It’s all happening at Todd’s House, 114 Ryler Dr. from 3-6pm today.

Mountain Bike Specialists is the third bike shop in Durango we visited last week while shopping for a bike. It’s located at 949 Main Ave in downtown Durango.

I had been in there once before while out shopping and picked up a tube and a mountain biking book. It looks to me like it’s the most high end shop out of the five.

The name is a bit misleading, they might be mountain bike specialists, but they aren’t exclusively mountain bikes. They sell many road bikes and hybrids as well.

We were greeted as we walked in the door and looked at their selection. As I said they are on the higher end and we weren’t looking for a bike that pricey. In addition to bikes they have a good selection of accessories and clothing. They are the only place I’ve seen Durango Wheel Club, Iron Horse Bicycle Classic and Steamworks Brewing Company jerseys. On a totally unrelated note, I’d love to get a local beer jersey to represent my new town, but it looks like they only make Steamworks Colorado Kölschand Steam Engine Lager, not my favorites.

In both of my experiences at Mountain Bike Specialists the staff has been helpful. No complaints. They also host rides starting from their shop every Wednesday night in the summer time.
