A little over a month ago, Sunday October 18th was the 2nd Annual Durango Home Grown Festival at Buckley Park. A big part of the Home Grown Festival was apples, there are so many apple trees in the area, producing so many apples that they can’t all be eaten or even given away (I’ve had apple trees in both houses I’ve lived in here and didn’t get close to using even half the apples). The Home Grown Festival asked people to bring their extra apples down to the park and festival goers crushed the apples into juice.

The next day, brewers from all four local breweries got together and brewed Insider Apple Ale from the 116 gallons of apple juice pressed at the festival. This is the second year they’ve brewed Insider Apple Ale. Now a little over a month later Insider Apple Ale will be released, tomorrow — Tuesday, November 24th, 2009 around Durango in 22oz bottles. One hundred percent of profits from Insider go back to the Home Grown Festival. Last year’s profits were used to help purchase a new apple press.

“It tastes more like apples, than it does beer,” said Erik Maxson, Head Brewer at Carver Brewing Co. “but it is without a doubt beer!”

The Durango Bootleggers, comprised of Carver Brewing Co., Durango Brewing Co., Steamworks Brewing Co., and Ska Brewing Co., is a unified umbrella organization set up by the city’s brewers to spread benevolence throughout the community.
