I haven’t been blogging about bikes much, even though I’m still riding (and will post up some pics/info about my winterized bike soon) it’s just hard to get too excited about cycling with all that snow out there. But there have been a couple things in the new recently that are potential threats to Durango area trails.

First is news that La Plata County is thinking about building a road from the Three Springs area to downtown Durango. This would get pretty close to Horse Gulch/Telegraph and many other trails just outside Durango. The Durango Herald has a new piece about it, and the Durango Telegraph has a piece that looks at it from an open space perspective. Both are worth a read. I haven’t heard anything from Trails 2000 about this, but I imagine they’re working hard to keep access to open space and trails open.

The second piece of news is down in Farmington. According to the Durango Wheel Club usage of the Glade Recreation Area (Road Apple trails) is being looked at, possibly allowing more motorized vehicles (4×4’s, dirt bikes, etc). The BLM is accepting comments on trail usage until January 15th, so click here to let them know how you’d like to see the trails used.

And last, my wife wrote an article for The Telegraph about Walt Axthelm, a 76 year old Durango resident that recently took first place in his age group at the Cyclocross National Championships.
